Time Management

Between meetings, working projects and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, good leaders have to understand how to manage their time properly. The most straightforward method is understanding how to prioritize. Prioritizing means sectioning work into categories and assigning time to them as necessary. For example, if you have to review an on-going project, prepare for a meeting you have the next day and pick out a birthday gift for your mother for the weekend, how do you divide your time to accomplish all these goals?

The first step is to decide what is most important. In this case, this could be the meeting as it is most urgent and most important. Then you might reschedule the review for a different day. You could also delegate the review to a capable subordinate who could give you the summary. Your mother’s gift is important but not as urgent and you can do it at any time.

Decide on what is most important and requires your urgent attention and organize activities from most to least important and urgent.
